Curriculum

Brookstone uses nationally recognized curricula that are carefully chosen to challenge students to excel in every academic area.

Reading/Writing

Orton Gillingham: This highly effective method teaches letter sounds, vowel digraphs, consonant blends, and spelling rules in a sequential cumulative order. Kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning are integrated into this successful approach. Words and sentences are included for dictation and reading.

Shurley Grammar: Students in grades 1-5 develop strong grammatical understanding through this interactive program. As students become proficient in grammar, they are given opportunities to practice and edit using various formats of descriptive, narrative, and expository writing.

Novel Units: Students in grades 2-8 also enhance their love of reading and expand their worldview through discussions and activities based upon novels they read together as a class.

Math

Singapore Math: This program uses an inquiry approach with hands-on manipulatives to teach depth in both computational mastery and mathematical reasoning. It uses Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (C-P-A) in teaching math. Students are introduced to a new concept with manipulatives to help them see and understand the math. Students then move to seeing pictures of manipulatives on paper or a screen so they can see the image in their minds. They then replace the pictures with numbers which are abstract. A majority of our students love math because they have such deep understanding of the concepts.

History and Social Studies

History and Social Studies are incorporated into the reading program for Kindergarten through third grade. Brookstone uses the Core Knowledge Curriculum for guidance in 4th through 8th grades.

Science

Students get an opportunity to study a few areas in depth. Our goal is to have students who love science and are excited about exploring our world. The program is very hands on with a lot of experiments.

Bible

The Bible program is built to give the students a deep understanding of the flow of Biblical History. At the lower grades, students learn the Bible stories, and as students advance to upper grades, these stories are placed in context. The goal is to provide students with a strong Biblical knowledge of the Old and New Testaments.
